It's autumn, and everyone started moralizing about the wearing of masks again. Because that worked so well for the past three years and a half. Heavens forbid we try to articulate good reasons instead. You know, like rational people would. But are we, or are we just using rationality as a cudgel?
Let me tell you why I wear a mask. And yes, I'm one of those silly people who never really stopped doing it.
- Scientific studies found that masks protect the wearer too.
- In fact, masks were found to be the single most effective defense against the virus.
- Not to mention all kinds of other air-transmitted diseases.
- In fact, masks were found to be the single most effective defense against the virus.
- They also protect against air pollution. Try one if your nose is always stuffy.
- They keep your face and throat warm in the winter, too.
- We finally have the ideal pretext to hide our faces from cameras everywhere.
- Better yet, wearing a mask spares you from having to smile at strangers.
- Last but not least, masks can make for an awesome fashion statement.
And sure, there are some disadvantages, too:
- They muffle your speech, so people have to actually pay attention.
- Conspiracy theorists will spout bullshit at you.
- You might have some trouble breathing, for example in very hot weather.
Boo-hoo, that's so, so hard. I wonder how we're going to cope.
For the first time in over three years, this summer I tried going without a mask again, if only in open air, preferably just at the park, away from crowds. And guess what, I happily went right back to wearing one most days, having seen what it's like. Maybe that's just me.
Trying different ways to convince people, what a concept.
